INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR GOLF COMPETITION
The Second Annual BMW Guam USA Junior Open is scheduled for Dec. 19 and 20 at the Starts Guam Golf Resort in Yigo.
Tee time on both days is 10:30 a.m. Tournament chairman Rene Ong said he is pleased that Guam is hosting a tournament to give some of the island's junior golfers more exposure to an international level of play. "You get the experience without paying the airfare," Ong said.
Junior golfers from the Philippines, Japan and Korea are expected to compete in the tournament. About 50 participants have signed up, but Ong is hoping the number will increase as the junior open approaches.
Based on the Calloway format, Ong said a local representative from the United States Golf Association would also be on hand to oversee the action. "Everything will be by the book," he said.
Ong added that last year's tournament was quite competitive so he is looking forward to seeing some of the island's best junior golfers go head-to-head against international competition again. "It's amazing when you see kids that young play so good," he said.
The registration fee for the tournament is $125 and includes a practice round on Dec. 18 as well as a welcome dinner on that day. An awards ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 20 at the Fiesta Resort in Tumon.
